Cubs sacrifice morals to win World Series

The Chicago Cubs are willing to do anything, including trade for a man accused of domestic abuse, to finally win a World Series.

On Monday, the Cubs and New York Yankees made a trade. Chicago sent its top prospect and three other players to the Bronx in exchange for flame-throwing closer Aroldis Chapman. Chapman was originally a star with the Cincinnati Reds before being dealt this offseason to the Los Angeles Dodgers, only to have that deal nixed because Los Angeles wasn’t comfortable with the allegations surrounding the Cuban.

While details remain murky on what exactly Chapman did to the mother of his child, but we know by his own admission, there was physical contact. This led to a 30-game suspension by Major League Baseball, citing the domestic abuse policy.

Some in the sports world simply don’t care if Chapman pushed, poked or punched this innocent woman. They just want a championship. They want 25 grown men who are complete strangers, wearing matching uniforms, to win a trophy. They want that badly enough that they will sacrifice their own dignity.

Have a chance to win the World Series since 1908? It’s time to check morals at the door. Please and thank you.

While this isn’t the point, Chicago was more than good enough to win the Fall Classic without Chapman. Going into Monday’s action, the Cubs were 59-38, the best record in the sport. They had a 7.5-game lead on the second-place St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central, but general manager Theo Epstein decided that was not enough.

Epstein could have traded for Kansas City Royals closer Wade Davis, or talked to the Oakland Athletics about Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson. The Los Angeles Angels are sure to be selling. What about Huston Street? None of them have ever been accused of beating a woman.

Some will claim this was the move that put Chicago over the top, but that’s a fallacy. The Cubs now face more pressure than ever to win the World Series.

If they don’t, they sold their soul and got nothing in return.
