The days of Roger Federer dominating the men’s side of tennis are over and so is his 2016 season on the court.
In a note to his fans, Federer wrote that he’ll miss representing Switzerland in the 2016 Rio Olympics and will miss the remainder of the season (including next month’s U.S. Open) due to complications in his left knee that required surgery earlier this year.
Here’s Federer’s note on his official Facebook account:
The upside is that Federer’s career isn’t finished. After his semifinal loss at Wimbledon to Milos Raonic, there were concerns that it would be his final appearance ever on Centre Court at the All England Club.
Federer did confirm in the note that he does plan to play in 2017 and will look to expand his all-time record of 17 major title victories further. He hasn’t won a major since Wimbledon in 2012, but an extended period away from the game and some “extensive rehabilitation” after a surgery to repair a torn meniscus might help Federer’s career extend a little longer.
With Federer gone, next month’s U.S. Open just became a two-horse race with Novak Djokovic and Wimbledon champion Andy Murray as the two favorites.
There’s no telling if Federer could’ve advanced far enough to take down Djokovic or Murray with concerns about his knee after a fun run at Wimbledon, but a fresh Roger Federer in 2017 could make for quite a fun ride. His playing days are coming to a close, so the more Federer on the courts, the better for the game of tennis.
