See what’s inside the Toybox in new Yooka-Laylee trailer

From those of you who backed up the Yooka-Laylee Kickstarter project last year, you should be receiving codes to try out an early version of the game starting today.

Back in the golden age of video games, where the Nintendo 64 was arguably the most popular video game console out in the market, players all over the world played a ton of memorable video games that are still very popular in today’s society. One video game developer that’s single-handedly responsible for shaping the video game industry with critically acclaimed 3D platformers is Rare.

Rare is a british developing company, which during the beginning days of Nintendo’s start in the video game industry, the company had full support from Nintendo with an unlimited budget. With Nintendo’s support, they created amazing games, such as Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Donkey Kong 64, and the most popular, Banjo-Kazooie. Unfortunately, Microsoft purchased Rare and the company hasn’t been able to live up to their glory days on the Nintendo 64.

Although they have tried, their most recent games haven’t been well-received by the video game audience. Now, many of the video game developers and creators who worked with Rare in the past have reunited and have created a brand-new studio known as Playtonic Games. Their goal was to cater to the old school fans and create games that they’ve been wanting for years.

In 2014, they launched a Kickstarter campaign known as Yooka-Layle – A 3D Platformer Rare-vival. Yooka-Laylee is a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie, meaning that it will be played in the same style as the game and will be heavily influenced in all aspects by it.

When this Kickstarter was first announced, fans all over the world funded this project and it reeled in almost three million dollars. Backers of the project were promised many features and perks and today, those who funded this project can get a taste of Yooka-Laylee in a brand-new pre-alpha version called Toybox. Check out the trailer below.

If players are worried about this version spoiling plot elements, they shouldn’t be. The Toybox is a spoiler-free version of the game that will give players a taste of what’s to come. It’s very exciting to know that developers are returning to these styles of games that many players grew up on.

Yooka-Laylee is set to release sometime in early 2017.
