Warriors to give JaVale McGee Shot to make team
By Mark Gunnels
The Golden State Warriors have just about everything you could ask for except a rim protector. Is JaVale McGee the answer?
As Golden State Warriors lick their chops to see the four-time scoring champ Kevin Durant play alongside their three all-stars, there’s one glaring hole they’d like to fill before October.
Rim protection.
There’s been rumors circulating of potentially obtaining Larry Sanders and even Jermaine O’Neal, but JaVale McGee is the lucky candidate to get an officially invite to training camp.
The past five years McGee has essentially been a non-factor in the landscape of the association, as he’s only played in 85 games during that span.
With that being said, it’s not as if Golden State will be asking McGee to turn into Dwight Howard all of a sudden. If he makes the team, his job will be fairly cut and dry.
Play defense, rebound and hustle every single second you’re on the court.
As the Warriors are currently constructed, you’ll notice they’re pretty thin in the front court.
For as good as Draymond Green is, you don’t want him at the five for long stretches because he’s undersized at 6-foot-9. Plus, he isn’t known as the greatest leaper in the world.
In order for the Warriors to grab Durant, they had to sacrifice 7-footer Andrew Bogut and obviously anybody would do that in a heartbeat.
Nonetheless, it’s left the Warriors with a need to fill.
For his career, McGee averages 1.7 blocks per game and back in 2012, he averaged 2.5 blocks per game.
