The New York Yankees have finally decided to sell. They have traded Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs and Andrew Miller to the Cleveland Indians. It is likely that they will move even more pieces, including catcher Brian McCann.

However, they are still interested in contending next season so they needed to rebuild their bullpen. According to Jon Heyman, the Yankees have acquire Tyler Clippard from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Clippard should help the Yankees quickly rebuild their bullpen after losing two elite relievers in Chapman and Miller. An interesting way that this could also help the Yankees long-term is that it could keep Dellin Betances from getting saves. That would likely keep Betances’ next contract from getting too expensive since he still can’t ask for closer’s money if he’s not getting saves.

He is due $4.25 million in 2017, which means that he’ll be around in 2017 when the Yankees likely try to contend again. If he doesn’t work out, they can easily move him at next year’s trade deadline. Clippard is home run susceptible and has struggled for the Diamondbacks this season. However, the Yankees know him well, as they were the team that originally drafted him.

The Yankees drafted Clippard, now 31 years old, in the ninth round of the 2003 MLB draft. They later traded him to the Washington Nationals for 2007. Clippard pitched for the New York Mets in 2015.
