The Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers are gearing up for their respective playoff runs by exchanging right-handed pitchers.

The Toronto Blue Jays made it known that they would be buyers at the trade deadline when they acquired Melvin Upton Jr. in the midst of a series against the San Diego Padres. The area they needed to bolster the most was pitching, which is why they acquired Mike Bolsinger from the Los Angeles Dodgers, with Jesse Chavez going the other way.

Ken Rosenthal was the first to report Chavez would go to the Dodgers, while Joel Sherman reported the one-for-one swap:

Chavez spent two stints with the Blue Jays, initially being acquired off waivers in 2011. He returned to the team after Liam Hendriks went to the Oakland Athletics, hoping to compete for the fifth starter spot. In the end, the Jays promoted Aaron Sanchez to a starter in one of the best decisions they ever could’ve made. Chavez ended up with a 1-2 record with a 4.57 ERA while in the bullpen.

Bolsinger, meanwhile, boasts a 1-4 record with a 6.83 ERA, and is four years younger than Chavez. Perhaps the Blue Jays felt that Bolsinger would offer an upgrade over Chavez while at the same time not threatening Sanchez’s spot in the starting rotation.

Jays fans may be disappointed that they aren’t swinging for the fences and getting a David Price-type name this year, but they are still making upgrades by cutting some dead weight in Drew Storen and Jesse Chavez. It’ll be interesting to see if all of this is enough to get them back to the playoffs, since the AL East is wide open at the moment.
