The Dallas Cowboys may be looking at the free agent market after backup quarterback Kellen Moore broke his ankle Tuesday.

The Dallas Cowboys have dealt with Tony Romo being injured often in the recent past. This meant the Cowboys needed to have a solid backup quarterback ready to go in case of another injury.

The backup in 2016 was expected to be Kellen Moore, until some unfortunate news came out of Cowboys’ training camp.

Moore’s injury is a major blow to the quarterback plans in Dallas, as any injury to Romo could result in another lost season.

The other quarterbacks on the roster are Jameill Showers and rookie Dak Prescott, both of whom have no NFL experience.

As of right now, Prescott should move into the backup role and get the majority of the second-team reps. This will allow him to adjust to the backup role and get more time with some of the better players on the roster throughout training camp and the preseason.

But Jerry Jones will surely be looking for another, more experienced quarterback to bring in to be Romo’s backup during the season. The first name that comes to mind is Nick Foles, but Jones said just last week that Foles wasn’t being looked at as an option.

This statement was accompanied by others praising the work of Moore and his development with the team. Now that he is injured, Foles could be a prime target. He has experience as a starter and has had success in the NFL, most notably with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The 27-year-old quarterback is somehow still a free agent, and the Cowboys should see this as an opportunity to add an experienced backup to the roster. Romo has proven he is injury-prone, and Foles could be a backup who picks up where Romo left off is an injury does occur.
