With the Cowboys needing a quarterback to step in at practice, head coach and former signal-caller Jason Garrett took some snaps.

Injuries are already hampering the Dallas Cowboys for the 2016 NFL season at the quarterback position. They recently lost backup Kellen Moore to a broken right tibia, leaving them with just rookie Dak Prescott to back up Tony Romo. The latter is coming off his own injury concerns, as he was lost for most of 2015 to a broken collarbone.

Dallas is rumored to have interest in free agent quarterback Josh Freeman. However, nothing is set with him coming to Jerry World. This leaves the team limited at practice while they find another signal-caller.

So, on Thursday, of all people, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett stepped in at practice to take some snaps.

Not too bad there, coach.

Garrett isn’t a stranger to the quarterback position in the NFL, though. He played in the league from 1993-2000 in a backup role. Seven of the eight years were spent with the Cowboys, where he totaled 2,042 yards and 11 passing touchdowns.

Dallas should eventually pick up an experienced quarterback to play behind Romo. Someone is needed with Romo a risk at age 36. He could go down with a single play, and potentially relying on Prescott could be trouble. The 2016 draft pick may need a few years to develop, before being placed into any type of role.

All this is only the beginning of what should be an interesting year in Dallas.
