In the early days of the Olympics, the big moments are often yet to come to the fore. It isn’t perhaps until the drama of the athletics finals by day 4 or 5 that much of the excitement comes. This summer, however, by virtue of being hosts, the pressure cooker is piping hot for Brazil’s soccer players, and after a horrific first round result, one of the games’ memorable moments could be unfolding as early as the night of the first Sunday.

The expectation is so much so that Neymar, the Barcelona star and Brazilian sensation was drafted into the squad as one of the three over 23 players that are allowed in the squad. There is perhaps no other medal that the Brazilian public expects and yearns for as much as the soccer gold. Lose on Sunday to minnows Iraq, and such expectation will come crashing down in nightmarish fashion.

Brazil with a squad laced in quality were expected to walk their group on their way to claiming the gold after losing four years ago in the final. Such plain sailing progression has not played out, however, after a frustrating 0-0 draw to South Africa. Fail to lose again, and their tournament could well be over, but a team headlined by Neymar, Gabriel Jesus and Barbosa cannot lose to Iraq, can they?
