In the same group as hosts Brazil, both South Africa and Denmark were realistically looking at second place to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. However, South Africa themselves opened up a multitude of possibilities within group A after a surprise draw with Brazil, and now both Denmark and their opponents will be hopeful of qualification.
It was a valiant performance from South Africa against the favorites, resisting an onslaught of attacks, especially after having to play with 10 men for the final 30 minutes, after Mothobi Mvala’s reckless and stupid sending off with two yellow cards in the space of a couple of minutes.
While South Africa were shocking the world and ripping up the script, Denmark were simply shocking themselves, missing a host of glorious chances to complete a 0-0 stalemate with an Iraq team that should have been beaten.
Now with all four teams sitting on one point after the two goalless draws, the group is wide open. All four teams will fancy themselves to win one more match in the hope of securing qualification, and this is sure to be a tight and tense affair between two countries who make a surprise run at the medals if conditions fall right.
