The second round of pool play matches in the men’s volleyball tournament at the 2016 Rio Olympics featured more upsets and thrills, as the medal contenders are beginning to separate themselves from the pack.

Following a surprising sweep at the hands of Canada to open the tournament, Team USA was in desperate need of a win against upstart Italy, who upset France in its first match. Things got off to a poor start, as the United States lost the first set 28-26 on a service error and back-row violation.

The U.S. would take the second, but service errors continued to pile up in a third set loss. Italy put away the match 25-23 in the fourth set, with Osmany Juantorena leading the way with 20 points.

Elsewhere in Pool A, France earned its first win of the tournament with a quick sweep of Mexico. Egypt took down Cuba in straight sets to get on the board as well.

Poland and Iran played five hard-fought sets in by far the wildest match of the day. Iran won consecutive sets after dropping the first two, but  the Polish squad won an 18-16 fifth-set grind and now has five points for the tournament. After Poland won a wild match point that was challenged and upheld, the teams nearly came to blows in the handshake line.

Tuesday’s action opened with a crucial match between Russia and Argentina, both of whom won on Sunday. Behind 18 points from Bruno Lima, Argentina won in four sets to move to the top of the Pool B standings.

The men’s tournament will return Thursday, with Team USA taking on Brazil in the marquee match.
