The beach volleyball Round of 16 concluded with eight more matches on Saturday.

The quarterfinals for the both the men’s and women’s beach volleyball quarterfinals are set after a busy Saturday on the Copacabana. Team USA’s Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena figured to recieve a test against strong Austrian side Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl in the final match of the evening. The American duo turned in an impressive 21-14, 21-15 sweep and look like a major gold medal threat heading into the quarterfinals.

Saturday morning opened with top seeded Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt of Brazil taking on Spain’s Adrian Gavira and Pablo Herrera. The hosts held off a strong challenge from the Spanish in a 24-22 first set win before cruising 21-13 in the second.

Brazil didn’t have such success with its other men’s team, as Pedro Solberg and Evandro Goncalves bowed out against Nikita Liamin and Dmitri Barsouk of Russia. The Russians overcame a first set loss, winning the final two frames 21-14, 15-10.

Two teammates met in a battle of Canadian squads for the right to a spot in the women’s quarterfinals. Sarah Pavan and Heather Bansley easily swept compatriots Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas to advance.

Germany’s Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst remained perfect on the tournament with a 21-19, 21-10 sweep of Isabelle Forrer Anouk Verge-Depre of Switzerland. The other Swiss women’s team of Joana Heidrich and Nadine Zumkehr picked up a dramatic five-set victory over Madelein Meppelink and Marleen van Iersel of the Netherlands with a 15-10 win in the third

The women’s final eight was rounded out by Taliqua Clancy and Louise Bawden of Australia, who continued an upset run with a 15-11 third set win over Monika Brzostek and Kinga Kołosińska of Poland. On the men’s side, Robert Meeusen and Alexander Brouwer of the Netherlands took down Chaim Schalk and Ben Saxton in straight sets.
