The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed former Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jhonas Enroth to a one-year deal worth $750,000.

After trading for Anaheim Ducks goaltender Frederik Andersen, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been looking for a solid backup option in net. With very few internal options, the Maple Leafs were forced to look at free agents. They have announced that they have signed goaltender Jhonas Enroth to a one-year deal worth $750,000.

From NHL.com:

"Enroth, 28, appeared in 16 regular season games with the Los Angeles Kings, posting a record of 7-5-1 with a .922 save percentage and a 2.17 goals against average. In 147 career regular season NHL games, Enroth has amassed a record of 50-66-15 with a .911 save percentage and a 2.80 goals against average."

The Leafs are taking a bit of a gamble on Enroth, hoping that he can replicate his numbers from last season. It’s a very cheap deal so even if it doesn’t work out, they can easily send him to the AHL and call up Garrett Sparks. Enroth will serve as the backup to Andersen, who the Maple Leafs paid a hefty price for earlier this offseason.

Though Andersen will be the starter, Enroth will likely still get starts. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Maple Leafs wind up trading him before the NHL trade deadline. If Sparks does well for the Toronto Marlies, it would make a lot of sense to trade Enroth.

With the Enroth signing, the Leafs are likely done for the offseason. They might sign some players to a tryout but with a complicated cap situation, don’t expect anything huge. Though Toronto is technically over the salary cap, they will likely place Nathan Horton, Stephane Robidas and potentially others on the long term injured reserve list before the season begins. They will also likely send down a few players. The Maple Leafs have completely overhauled their goaltending from last season.
