Cowboys rookie RB Ezekiel Elliott’s visit to a Seattle marijuana dispensary isn’t sitting well with his owner.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do, or so goes the famous saying. So, when in Seattle, it was only natural that Ezekiel Elliott, first round pick of the Dallas Cowboys, made a side trip to stop off at Herban Legends a few hours before making his preseason debut. While it appears as though Elliott was just checking out the merchandise and not sampling it, his owner, Jerry Jones, is not pleased.

“Well, I think that in and of itself the reason we are talking about is in a way part of the learning process,” Jones said after the Cowboys’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday. “But it’s not good. It’s just not good. It’s just not good.”

Not good indeed, especially considering marijuana is still banned by the NFL whether or not Washingtonians can freely imbibe. Elliott is also under investigation for an alleged domestic abuse incident after being accused by his former girlfriend. The running back has denied those allegations, and has yet to be interviewed regarding them.

Kerfuffle surrounding his alleged visit to a marijuana store aside, Elliott had a productive debut for the Cowboys, running for 48 yards on seven carries. He played most of the first quarter.

The Cowboys have bigger issues to worry about than a rookie spending a few minutes in a weed shop as they prepare to head home from Seattle. Quarterback Tony Romo was injured on the third play of the game and did not return. He did lobby to re-enter the game, but stayed on the sideline as a precaution.

For Ezekiel Elliott, being caught on camera, as well as happily posing for pictures with fans, at a dispensary will have to serve as a learning experience, as his owner stated. As an NFL star, his every move will be watched and scrutinized. It’s understandable that Elliott would want to experience the novelty of being in a legal marijuana store while in Seattle (as many tourists do). That’s all well and good for most people, but for an NFL star, he is probably better off shying away a few hours before his big debut.
