During Week 3 of the 2016 NFL preseason, New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz made his first catch for the team in 685 days.

On Saturday night while touchdown pass plays were catching most fans’ attention, a very straightforward catch was a huge deal for the New York Giants. That’s because receiver Victor Cruz caught his first pass on the field in nearly two years.

The play came early in the third quarter and featured starting quarterback Eli Manning finding his star receiver. From the shotgun spot, Manning was able to find Cruz for just four yards. However, it was a welcome sight for Giants fans. Cruz has been off the field for an assortment of injuries for nearly two years now.

In a non-contact injury, Cruz tore his patellar tendon and was sidelined for the 2014 season. He had full intentions of making a return for the 2015 season. However, that kept getting pushed back. An aggravated left calf hindered him and eventually it was announced he’d have season-ending surgery. Basically, Cruz played six games for the 2014 season and that was it.

He was a member of the Giants’ Super Bowl XLVI championship team in 2011. Cruz had the team’s only receiver touchdown in that game which helped them grab the early lead over New England. The sight of him back on the field and catching the ball is certainly something fans of the team want to see with expectations high for the 2016 NFL season.

That said, after what happened recently with Dallas Cowboys’ starter Tony Romo, no team can play it too safe with their core players. It’s good to see Cruz making the catch, but the team may want to really err on the side of caution with him so he can make plays this season.
