The homecoming for Browner didn’t work out as planned after a year in New Orleans where he battled through an injury and a ton of penalties.

The Seattle Seahawks are expected to let go veteran cornerback Brandon Browner as the team will trim its roster in advance of the Tuesday cutdown date, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.

The 32-year old Oregon State product spent one year with the Saints before returning to the club where he enjoyed the most success. Unfortunately the reunion didn’t pan out as planned and he will be part of the team’s first round of cuts.

Browner would have been entering his seventh year in the NFL had he stuck with the Seahawks as a “hybrid safety,” something that has caught on in the league with the success of players like Deone Bucannon and Mark Barron. He suffered through a horrible season with New Orleans playing through a torn MCL and apparently wore out his welcome there.

In his career, Browner has a dozen interceptions that were returned for 340 yards and a pair of touchdowns, one going for 94 yards. He had 94 passes defended and forced three fumbles. Despite an injury plagued season, he still managed a career-best 63 tackles, but with only one pick.

According to the report, head coach Pete Carroll said during the offseason that the team had a hybrid safety/corner role in mind for Browner because he matched up well against tight ends and slot receivers, however, it appears others who were looking to grab that slot passed him by. But Browner also had a little luggage because he became the most-penalized player over a single season in NFL history with a ton of defensive holding calls with New Orleans.

With veteran corners still being needed around the league, Browner could still get a call from another NFL team, especially if one goes down with an injury. The question is whether he has lost a step that led to so many holding calls a year ago.
