Don Cherry had some strong words when describe the Colin Kaepernick situation.

Just about everyone has given their opinion about San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sitting during the national anthem. If you’re looking for an opinion from someone who isn’t an American, Don Cherry recently gave his. It’s as controversial and outlandish as you’d expect it to be.

Cherry doesn’t agree with Kaepernick’s actions and he uses some pretty flawed logic in order to get his point across and it needs to be addressed. Cherry believes Kaepernick is likely protesting the national anthem because he knows that he is finished. The issue with this is every American citizen has every right to protest however they see fit so long as it doesn’t infringe on anyone else’s constitutional rights. Why should it matter who does it? Also, Kaepernick is only 28 years old. Calling him “finished” is a stretch.

Another point that Cherry argues is that Kaepernick is not anything like Muhammad Ali because Ali lost three of his best years. That much is true. Ali put his entire career at risk by protesting the Vietnam War. But Kaepernick is doing so as well. Look at Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf to see what could happen to Kaepernick. He might not have as much on the line as Ali did but that doesn’t undermine what Kaepernick did or what he is protesting.

Cherry also argues that Kaepernick should have done it during the Super Bowl if he really cared, which is extremely flawed logic. People mature and develop. They gain courage. Perhaps Kaepernick was not ready at Super Bowl 47, as he was just 25 years old at the time and completely new to super stardom.

He also implies that Kaepernick should donate his money to his causes instead of protesting if he really cared. People have different ways of showing their support. Kaepernick probably does donate his money. The injustices and plights that African-Americans face in America are causes that require a bit more than just money. They require voices to stand up. Whether or not you agree with Kaepernick, his courage is quite admirable.
