Kevin Durant now has a second portrait tattoo of a deceased music icon, as he is seen with Rick James tattoo on his left thigh.

Since joining the Golden State Warriors in 2016 NBA free agency, superstar small forward Kevin Durant has gotten some major ink in his left leg. Shortly after signing with the Warriors, Durant was seen with a full Tupac Shakur tattoo on his left calf.

After getting back from the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Durant is seen with a giant Rick James tattoo on his left thigh. It’s super freaky.

Though it has been over 12 years since James’ death in 2004, he is still known in United States pop culture for his 1981 single “Super Freak” and his role in a 2004 “Chappelle’s Show” sketch mocking the more volatile moments of his life.

“Super Freak” gained bigger popularity in 1989 when MC Hammer sampled James’ patented bass line in his hit “U Can’t Touch This.” James helped bring funk to the mainstream and Durant seems to have had a profound effect on him growing up.

Since joining the Warriors, Durant has begun using his legs as a canvas for his new body art. Would we be all that surprised to see his right leg feature Notorious B.I.G., Jimi Hendrix, or Prince in the next few months? Those kind of tattoos would certainly echo in the trend of Shakur and James on his left leg.

Durant was probably instructed by the Oklahoma City Thunder organization to not have visible tattoos during his eight years with the club. He’s always had a ton of ink under his jersey. Maybe this is a means for Durant to rebel against conservative Oklahoma City now that he is playing in a more progressive metropolitan area in the Bay Area?
