Rex Ryan returns to Baltimore to face his old team in Week 1 of the 2016 NFL season. It’s a chance for the Ravens to prove their credentials as a playoff contender in the AFC by beating Ryan’s talented Buffalo Bills squad.

Ryan’s back to face the team where he established his reputation as a defensive guru. The son of Buddy was defensive line coach when the 2000 Ravens won the Super Bowl with perhaps the stingiest unit of all time.

Later, he constructed his own fearsome defenses as coordinator from 2005-09. Ryan’s Ravens became noted for designer blitz pressures that helped take Baltimore to the AFC Championship Game in 2008.

Current Ravens defensive honcho Dean Pees doesn’t have the same level of talent Ryan worked with. But he can still rely on some savvy veterans who will be key to stopping the Bills.

In particular, pass-rush combo Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil will need to corral Buffalo quarterback Tyrod Taylor. In the secondary, veteran safety Eric Weddle will be tested by terrific receiving tandem Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods.

Yet, the crucial role belongs to mammoth nose tackle Brandon Williams. He must plug the middle and help stuff Buffalo’s dynamic and punishing rushing attack led by LeSean McCoy.

The Ravens offense will go only as far as returning quarterback Joe Flacco can take them. He’s back after an injury hit, 5-11 2015 season.

A win for the Ravens will show they can keep pace in an AFC North many expect rivals the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals to dominate this season. Meanwhile, Ryan and the Bills must take full advantage of Tom Brady’s suspension, as they bid to usurp the New England Patriots as kings of the AFC East after finishing 8-8 a year ago.
