The No. 14 Oklahoma Sooners hosted the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday night. Here are the highlights, the final score, and a recap of the game.

With their backs against the wall, the No. 14 Oklahoma Sooners needed to beat the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes at home in Week 3 to have any shot at making the third annual College Football Playoff.

Well, it wasn’t meant to be for the Sooners in 2016, as Oklahoma couldn’t keep Ohio State wide receiver Noah Brown out of the end zone. Brown had four touchdown receptions for 70 yards, including one where he completely owned Michiah Quick on arguably the most impressive catch of the college football season.

Oklahoma’s efforts weren’t really helped by a pair of bad Baker Mayfield interceptions in the first half. The Sooners leaned on Mayfield too much in this game and it proved costly for Oklahoma football.

Mayfield sorely misses his favorite 2015 receiving target in Sterling Shepard, now with the NFL’s New York Giants. He’s a great player, but can’t be expected to win shootouts behind a terrible Mike Stoops defense. Oklahoma gave up nearly 300 yards on the ground in this one!

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett played with poise in a hostile road environment to clip the Sooners at home, 45-24. He was the second best player on the gridiron tonight behind only his favorite wide receiver target Brown.

The Buckeyes seem like a team that can not only win the Big Ten, but can win the College Football Playoff for the second time in three seasons. Oklahoma’s 2016 NCAA season has come a close before Big 12 play begins for the Sooners in Week 5 against TCU.

Three Stars

  1. Noah Brown: Brown had an unbelievable game for the Buckeyes. He had five catches for 72 yards and four touchdown receptions. His third grab was his best. Catching the ball around Quick’s body might be the best reception of this young NCAA season.
  2. J.T. Barrett: Barrett had a great night for Ohio State. He completed 14 of 20 passes for 152 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions. Barrett also ran the ball 17 times for 74 yards.
  3. Curtis Samuel: Samuel had the first touchdown of the game coming on a fourth down for 36 yards. He had 11 carries for 98 yards and that touchdown. Samuel would also have two catches for 20 yards.
