The No. 14 Miami Hurricanes will be wearing special helmets for Saturday’s game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in honor of Jose Fernandez.

Jose Fernandez’s death was not only a huge loss for baseball, but for Miami and the sports community as a whole. Numerous players and teams from other sports have paid tribute to Fernandez since he was found dead from a boating accident last Sunday.

The next team to honor Fernandez will be the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon for their game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Miami will be wearing helmets with a decal that reads “JF 16′, Fernandez’s uniform number with the Marlins, per the team’s official Twitter account.

Similar tributes have taken place across baseball over the past week, including players writing JF on their caps or writing No. 16 into the mound. Several clubs hung Fernandez jerseys from their clubhouse on Sunday, while the Marlins’ tribute the following night will live on in baseball history. The Dolphins also held a moment of silence for Fernandez prior to their game last Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

As the Hurricanes’ tribute indicates, Fernandez was a beloved figure in Miami who transcended baseball. After defecting from Cuba, Fernandez spent his entire four-year MLB career with the Marlins, quickly developing into one of the best pitchers in the game until he was tragically killed at the age of 24. Many will remember Fernandez for the spirit and joy he played the game with, rather than his terrific stats on the mound.
