Despite two straight losses, the Texas Longhorns tell Charlie Strong he won’t be fired this season, but that next game against Oklahoma is critical.

Anyone who works full-time wishes they could have the same job security as Charlie Strong. Texas’s 2-0 start to the season feels like an eternity ago, as they have now dropped two straight games. The first one was to Cal in a shootout, but they got thoroughly blown out by Oklahoma State to start their Big 12 schedule.

But despite their early struggles, ESPN’s Brett McMurphy is reporting that Texas has told Charlie Strong he won’t be fired. Despite that, he can’t afford to slip up next week when Texas and Oklahoma meet in the Red River Rivalry.

A three-game losing streak would be a back-breaker to a season that started with so much promise after their win vs. Notre Dame in the opener. But even with a defensive-minded coach like Charlie Strong at the helm, their defense has let them down so much this season. They have given up an average of 38.25 points this year. Even when they beat Notre Dame, they gave up 47 points and six touchdowns.

A win against Oklahoma won’t be easy to come by. While they went 1-2 in non-conference play, they are starting to heat up, and are currently blowing out TCU. But last year, Texas came into that game with a 1-4 record but pulled off the upset.

After the Oklahoma State loss, Texas athletic director told ESPN “I’m not evaluating Charlie, per se. I’m evaluating everything.” That means that even though Charlie Strong won’t be fired, we could still see chances to the Longhorns’ coaching staff. But in his third season, 6-7 was Strong’s most successful one yet at Texas.

When they beat Notre Dame, many thought that Texas was back. But they still have a ways to go to get back to national prominence. If it makes things any better, nobody from the Big 12 is going to the playoff this year anyway.
