Jeremy Lin perfectly summarized the state of the Brooklyn Nets in one play when he missed a wide open layup.

Even though it was only five years ago when the NBA landscape was rocked by Linsanity, it feels like an eternity. Now, the only thing insane about Jeremy Lin is his hairstyle.

More than anything, Lin’s lone season with the New York Knicks showed he could be a star in the making. Even though he and Carmelo Anthony simply would not get along, he was one of the most popular Knicks players in a long time.

He thought he might’ve had more success in Houston, since they have a vibrant Chinese community, but his opportunity to become the face of the franchise failed as soon as the Rockets acquired James Harden. He was effectively pushed out of Houston before spending a forgettable season in Los Angeles.

Five years later, he’s back in New York, but with the Brooklyn Nets. While both New York teams are in pretty untenable situations, he would’ve enjoyed playing with the likes of Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah more than Brook Lopez.

On plays like this, we’re reminded of how miserable it might be to watch the Nets this year:

Jeremy Lin wasn’t going to make the Nets a lot better, but it can’t get much worse than this, can it? At this stage in his career, Lin still has name value, and the appeal of him playing in New York will be enough to draw a crowd. But even after restoring his value as a sixth man for the Charlotte Hornets last year, that doesn’t mean we’ll see anything close to what we saw during Linsanity.

Lin’s time with the Knicks represents failed potential more than anything, and returning to the city on one of the worst teams in the league will hardly be enough to recapture those glory days. However, it’s worth noting that despite that horrible layup attempt, Lin had 21 points in 17 minutes of action in this game.
