Bryce Harper may have either paid tribute to the fallen gorilla, Harambe or the internet meme about him.

Washington Nationals star Bryce Harper has always been one to be controversial. This includes his stance on making baseball more fun, and his signature “clown question, bro” phrase.

The 23-year-old is one of the top players on the Washington Nationals’ postseason team. On Thursday night, they faced a do-or-die Game 5 in the NLDS, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. A win would set Washington up with the Chicago Cubs for a trip to the World Series.

Harper slumped for most of the 2016 season, so he looked for a way to get out of his funk for Game 5. He did so by honoring the fallen gorilla, Harambe, on the knob of his bat. He placed a decal there that says, “RIP” with a picture of Harambe. See it to believe it below.

It looks like Harambe hasn’t given Harper any luck, as he’s 0-2 with a walk through the first five innings. This put his batting average at .188 for the series.

As for Harambe, he’s the gorilla that infamously got shot and killed when he grabbed and dragged a three-year-old boy who climbed into a gorilla enclosure.

This received national attention in the news, but also in the form of a meme. While there’s no guarantee that Harper is honoring the death or meme of Harambe, the latter is more likely given past antics.

Harambe has become a popular meme on the internet. That, and the shouting of his name, along with an expletive or two, by people on national TV. It has become a trend and Harper looked to capitalize on it.
