Facing a tie game in the eighth inning, the Chicago Cubs hit a grand slam then a solo home run on back-to-back pitches to put it out of reach.

If you needed further proof that the Chicago Cubs are a team of destiny, look no further than Game 1 of the NLCS. They got to the Championship Series by turning a 5-2 deficit into a 6-5 lead in the span of a half-inning. And after they controlled most of the game, the Los Angeles Dodgers plated two runs off of Aroldis Chapman.

But as soon as it looked like we were destined for extra innings, up stepped Miguel Montero. With the bases loaded, he sent one deep into the Chicago night for a pinch-hit grand slam:

According to ESPN, it was just the third pinch-hit grand slam in postseason history. Dexter Fowler then put the icing on the cake by homering on Joe Blanton’s very next pitch to extend the lead to 8-3.

These aren’t your daddy’s Cubs. They can kill you in many different ways, and practically everyone in their lineup is a home run threat. No lead is ever truly safe against them, and the San Francisco Giants learned that the hard way. But after the Dodgers thought they had some real momentum after the top of the eighth, this was a soul-crushing blow.

Even though the Dodgers have Clayton Kershaw, they’re going to find it hard to take down these Cubs. If they could get Jake Arrieta to homer off of Madison Bumgarner, they can beat Kershaw. And at this point, the best chance they might have of beating the Cubs is if Kershaw can pitch every game.
