Alex Smith is in concussion protocol following a second nasty hit to the head against the Indianapolis Colts.

The Kansas City Chiefs took a gamble by putting quarterback Alex Smith in the game after a previous hit to the head left him very woozy. It’s a risk which did not pay off, as he has suffered another bad hit to the head. Smith is now in concussion protocol after his head hit the turf thanks to a Colts defender.

This is the second time against the Colts that Smith has suffered a significant blow to the head. It’s not likely he’ll play again against the Colts because this is the second time he has been in concussion protocol in one game.

Replacing him will be Nick Foles. Philadelphia Eagles fans are familiar with him, as he started his career with them when Andy Reid was their head coach. Philly traded him to the then St. Louis Rams in the infamous Sam Bradford trade. He never had success with the Rams, so he got released. Foles got picked up by his former coach in Kansas City.

This is also the second time today Foles has entered the game. He completed 10 of his 13 passes for 127 yards in his first stint. Smith could be out for at least a week if he has a concussion. A timetable for a return from a concussion is hard to define because it varies from person to person. But Smith probably won’t be playing for at least a few days and potentially a week or two.

In his career, Foles has had success with Andy Reid. He had a 79.2 QB rating under Reid as a rookie, throwing for six touchdowns and five interceptions. With Smith out, expect to see Foles get most of the first team reps in practice until he can prove he is healthy.
