Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras came up huge in the fourth inning of World Series Game 7 with a double to take a 3-1 lead

After Dexter Fowler opened Game 7 of the 2016 World Series up in a big way with a lead-off home run, the Chicago Cubs gave up their 1-0 lead. Entering the top of the fourth inning tied up, they needed to make something happen again against Cleveland Indians ace Corey Kluber. After Kris Bryant just got into home on a sac-fly, catcher Willson Contreras came up big.

The sacrifice left Ben Zobrist standing at second. Contreras had come up big a few times before int eh postseason, but this was a big moment. The heavy-hitting man behind the plate then delivered when it mattered most.

Contreras saw a pitch he liked and absolutely tagged it. He launched it to deep right-center, just shy of giving the Cubs their second home run of the game. Instead, he settled for a huge RBI double to give Chicago the 3-1 lead on the road in the decisive game:

Anyone who says that RBIs and hits in the fourth inning can’t be clutch have never watched a Game 7 in the World Series—much less played on a team that hasn’t won a World Series since 1908 in that game.

Obviously Contreras earning second put them in a position to potentially score again, but that didn’t happen. Kyle Hendricks took the mound in the bottom of the inning, though, and held onto the 3-1 advantage.
