Jaguars at Chiefs: Highlights, score and recap
By Brad Weiss
The Kansas City Chiefs ran their record to 6-2 on the season with a victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
In what was a closer game than expected, the Kansas City Chiefs took care of business at home, knocking off the Jacksonville Jaguars. Playing with their backup quarterback and third-string running back, the Chiefs were able to muster just enough offense to come away with the victory. In another strong performance by their defense, the Chiefs were able to hold the Jags to only one score until the fourth quarter, moving their record to 6-2.
Kansas City got on the board first in the contest, as Nick Foles his Albert Wilson for a 23-yard touchdown to open the scoring. That would be the only points scored in the first frame, and while the Chiefs ended the first with the lead, they suffered a big loss. Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin left the game due to soreness in the groin that had hampered him all week in practice. He would not return.
For the next two quarters, it was the Carlos Santos show, as the kicker booted four field goals. Jacksonville did pick up a touchdown in the second quarter, as Blake Bortles hit Allen Robinson for a one-yard score that capped an 11-play, 88-yard drive. The Jags would not score again until the fourth, when Bortles tossed his second touchdown of the game. The score would bring the Jags to within a score, as the Chiefs led 19-14.
During that fourth quarter, the Chiefs also lost their tight end, as Travis Kelce was ejected for yelling at the officials. Despite leaving early, Kelce still led the Chiefs in receiving, as the team got really nothing from their wide receivers outside of Wilson’s first quarter score. Kansas City iced the game after the two minute warning, when Bortles pass fell incomplete on a fourth down try.
With the Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos playing on Sunday Night Football, the Chiefs actually tied them at 6-2 atop the AFC West. Jacksonville continued their slow fall in the AFC South, as they have been widely disappointing this season. They played better on Sunday, but it is clear that they have a long way to go.
1. Kansas City Defense
The Kansas City Defense came to play on Sunday, as they had to step it up due to the weapons missing on the offensive side of the ball. For the most part, quarterback Nick Foles did not look good on Sunday, and the defense was able to keep them in the game. They were able to confuse Blake Bortles on numerous occasions, while coming up with big stops when they had to.
One huge play occured with 8:23 left in the game, with the Jaguars at the one-yard line. On a 2nd down run by Chris Ivory, the Chiefs were able to force the fumble, with Marcus Peters falling on it for a touchback. The play took the wind out of the Jags sails, as they were beginning to find some momentum. In total, the defense forced two fumbles, while Ramik Wilson had an interception of Bortles.
2. Cairo Santos
Santos provided a ton of points for the Chiefs on Sunday, racking up four field goals in the game. The offense was only able to put it into the end zone once, so it was imperative that Santos bring his A game. He knocked through field goals of 26, 51, 24, and 36 yards, scoring the final 12 points for the Chiefs on Sunday.
The third-year kicker has now hit seven of his last eight field goals over the past two games, giving the Chiefs one of the more consistent kicking games in the league. His 51-yarder on Sunday was his second-longest of the season, as he hit a 54-yarder against the Houston Texans in Week 2. In a week where the offense could not finish drives, Santos proved invaluable on Sunday.
3. Allen Robinson
We expected Robinson to play a huge role on Sunday, and he was really the only player on the Jaguars offense who played well. He led the team with seven receptions, catching a one-yard touchdown in the second quarter, while finishing second on the team in yards. He has been frustrated with his team’s play this season, and his numbers have suffered due to the team’s inconsistent play.
Robinson and Bortles were supposed to help lead the Jags to the playoffs this season, but that has not been the case by a longshot. The Jags are currently in last place in arguably the worst division in football, and both players have seen a big decline in production. The Jags struggled to move the ball for most of the game on Sunday, which inevitably led to another notch in the loss column.

Odds
The Kansas City Chiefs are huge favorites on Sunday, boasting a seven-point spread against the Jaguars. The over/under is set at 44, which is most likely due to the fact the sharks do not think Jacksonville is going to have much luck moving the ball.
Next Week
The Jaguars will head home to host the Houston Texans in an AFC South matchup in Week 10. Kansas City will travel to Carolina to take on the Panthers.
