Michail Antonio scored a back-post header to give West Ham a 1-0 lead against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Michail Antonio, he of the back-post header, has done it again. The Englishman scored his sixth league goal of the season, all headers, to give West Ham a 1-0 lead against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham started the match the better side, and had a Christian Eriksen goal disallowed for offside early on, but they’ve struggled to turn their dominance of possession into any real chances.

West Ham, sticking with the 3-4-3 formation that has served them well in recent weeks, have looked sharp, but hadn’t created many chances before Antonio opened the scoring. Dimitri Payet whipped in a corner, from which Cheikhou Kouyate hit the bar with a header, before Antonio eventually turned the ball in at the back post.

Tottenham have seriously struggled for goals as of late. They’ve managed three total, and zero from open play, in their last six games in all competitions. The return of Harry Kane from injury should improve their prospects in attack, but the early stages of this match haven’t provided huge encouragement on that front.

Spurs have slipped away from the top four somewhat in recent weeks, though they’re still very much within striking distance. A win would move them within a point of fourth-place Arsenal, who drew with Manchester United earlier in the day.

West Ham, meanwhile, find themselves in the thick of a relegation battle no one expected them to be a part of. Slaven Bilic’s side are down in 17th place, though a win would see them move up to 12th (or 11th, if they win by five goals).

They’ve looked good early on against Tottenham, though. Antonio, in particular, has been a handful, while Payet looks as dangerous as ever.
