According to a report from USA Today Sports, the Oregon Ducks could be preparing to fire head football coach Mark Helfrich.

In his first two seasons as Oregon head coach, Mark Helfrich won 24 games, a Pac-12 conference title and led the Ducks to the first College Football Playoff title game.

Since then, Helfrich and the Ducks have won just 13 games and finished this season at 4-8; the Ducks’ worst mark since 2004.

With the Ducks trending downward, the school is prepping to take some actions and Helfrich’s tenure could be coming to a close.

Here’s a report from Dan Wolken and George Schroder of USA Today Sports on Helfrich/Oregon’s future:

"Oregon has made preparations for a coaching search that will follow the eventual firing of Mark Helfrich, but the school has not officially pulled the trigger on the move as of late Saturday night, multiple people with knowledge of the process tell USA TODAY Sports. Those people spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the process."

Among those mentioned in the report were Western Michigan head coach P.J. Fleck and current Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin that could be in line to replace Helfrich.

A notable name that could also be on the Ducks’ radar is current Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly, who has reportedly shown interest in other coaching positions.

The report also mentioned that the Ducks want to move quick on finding a replacement for Helfrich. That’s partly due to schools wanting to get the new guy out quickly on the recruiting trail for the upcoming season.
