Bryant Bulldogs freshman guard Ikenna Ndugba dribbled the clock out against the Brown Bears thinking Bryant won. The problem was that Brown was up 91-90.

We sometimes forget that college athletics involve players that are usually between the ages of 18 and 23 years old. While college athletes are better at sports than most of us will ever be, they are still kids at the end of the day.

The adult brain doesn’t fully develop until age 24 anyway. On Monday night, college basketball reminded us just how quirky the sport can be at times.

The Bryant Bulldogs were playing the Brown Bears in a tight one that was going down to the wire in the second half. Bryant hit a go-ahead three-point field goal with 11.3 seconds remaining to go up 90-89 on the Bears at their place.

Brown would push the ball up the court and take a 91-90 lead with 3.8 seconds left. Then it got weird. Bryant true freshman guard Ikenna Ndugba apparently forgot the score of the game, thinking that Bryant was leading Brown with mere seconds left.

Ndugba then proceeded to dribble out the remaining 3.8 seconds of clock. He crossed halfcourt and threw the ball up in the air in celebration. Ndugba even tried to high-five his Bryant teammate thinking that the Bulldogs beat the Bears. Only after he was denied the high-five did Ndugba realize that he indadvertedly cost the Bulldogs the game…

It’s not on par with former Michigan Wolverines great Chris Webber calling a timeout that Michigan didn’t have in that National Championship game against the North Carolina Tar Heels, but this was still really bad clock management by the freshman point guard of Bryant.

He has time to put together a solid collegiate career for the Bulldogs. Ndugba may even become a special player for Bryant. But one thing is certain: he will never dribble out the clock down one point again.
