High school goaltender sets record with 98 saves in 12-0 loss

High school goaltender Tony Bruns set a national prep record with 98 saves in a 12-0 loss. 

Some goalies have to be miracle workers just to keep their team in games. If you’ve had that experience, pour one out for Minnesota high school goaltender Tony Bruns from Morris/Benton. In a 12-0 loss on Nov. 26, he set what is likely the national record for most saves in a single game with 98. That’s right, he saw 110 shots on goal and stopped 98 of them. Most NHL goalies don’t see 110 shots over four games, let alone in one.

“I was a little surprised,” Bruns said, via mnhockeyhub.com. “My whole career I’ve had a lot of shots, but never that many. I thought it was just like any other game.”

The current record is 84, set back in 1987. However, the National Federation of State High School Associations still needs to confirm Burns’ total. But according to the score sheet, he made 98 saves. For what it’s worth, he also set the Minnesota state hockey, previously at 76 saves. Bruns is a workhorse and this isn’t the first time he has had to face a ton of shots on goal. His previous record? 75 saves, accomplished on Nov. 28, 2015.

Let’s be fair to his team. Morris/Benton has struggled to ice a full hockey squad and Bruns is the guy who has to pay for it. They had just 11 skaters suit up during the loss, and three of them are new to the sport. And it’s not like Morris/Benton lost to a bunch of bums. They lost to one of the top teams in Minnesota, Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato.

The NHL record for most saves in a regulation game was set back in 1941 by Sam LoPresti, who made 80 saves. Including overtime, the record is 92 saves by Normie Smith in 1936. Dominik Hasek holds the record for most saves in a shutout with 70.
