Florida Atlantic is in talks with Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin to be the team’s head coach.

Lane Kiffin missed out on the head coach job with the Houston Cougars on Friday morning when they named Major Applewhite as the successor to Tom Herman. However, Kiffin may still end up with a head coaching job after all.

Kiffin has been linked to the vacancy at South Florida where Willie Taggart left to take the job at Oregon but that’s not his only option as Football Scoop reports, Kiffin is in talks with Florida Atlantic to be the team’s head coach.

Florida Atlantic fired Charlie Partridge after the Owls went 3-9 for the third straight year. The FBS program was only launched in 2001 so this is a far cry from the jobs he once held at prestigious programs like Tennessee and USC, respectively.

If Kiffin is set on becoming a head coach for the fourth time in his career, including his stint in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders, the Florida Atlantic job may be the best fit for Kiffin if he wants it now. He has also been linked to the LSU offensive coordinator job.

Outside of FAU and USF, the only other openings are at Cincinnati where they are reportedly targeting Ohio State defensive coordinator Luke Fickell, and Western Kentucky after Jeff Brohm went to Purdue.

Kiffin doesn’t have many options so if he’s ready to be a head coach again, FAU could make that a reality for him. Although, Football Scoop mentions economics could hinder that. Partridge made $600,000 per season at FAU and Kiffin could stand to make a much larger sum if he left for LSU as an assistant.

FAU would love to get Kiffin for the name brand he brings to the program in need of some publicity and he could be a head coach again. For Kiffin, his time at Alabama appears to be coming to an end, despite a successful tenure, so look for him to take the FAU before he is out of options.
