Seattle Sounders keeper Stefan Frei dove and stretched for a huge save in extra time to keep the 2016 MLS Cup level.

Toronto FC, if you looked at anything other than the scoreline, dominated the Seattle Sounders in the 2016 MLS Cup for the first 90 minutes. However, the scoreline is all that matters and that set at 0-0 after regulation. And a big part of that was the effort of keeper Stefan Frei. The Swiss man in the net was a monster. As the match slipped into extra time, though, Frei had an even bigger moment in mind.

As they did in regulation, Toronto continued to control the attacking portion of the match. They were pressing into the box seemingly at will and getting good looks. One such look came when a ball was crossed into the middle of the box with Jozy Altidore standing virtually unmarked.

Altidore made a great play on the ball and got his head on it. Though he didn’t hit it with a ton of power, the placement was gorgeous. Heading into the top right corner, it looked surely to be the go-ahead goal. However, Frei continued to look the MVP of the MLS Cup as he made one of the best saves in such a monstrous moment:

In case you need a better look at how ridiculous and amazing that save is, here’s the angle from behind the goal:

The Toronto crowd was obviously heartbroken after seeing such a beautiful save of what looked to be their home side’s winning goal in the championship match.

That save was also Frei’s seventh of the 2016 MLS Cup, which goes to show just how good he’d been on the night. His Sounders had managed only three shots with none on goal. Meanwhile, Toronto FC had been peppering him all night, but he didn’t let one in all the way up to penalties.
