Russell Westbrook wasn’t playing in Chesapeake Arena on Saturday, but you could have fooled me.

Wichita State’s Daishon Smith submitted his highlight of the night nominee in the Shockers’ matchup against the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, finishing a huge one-handed slam over Kristian Doolittle.

That would be a 6-foot-1 guard jamming it home against a 6-foot-7 defender in the most emphatic way possible. Doolittle subbed out of the game about a minute later, but he made sure to leave his dignity on the floor.

Smith’s slam was an emphatic punctuation mark on a less than emphatic Shockers’ victory. Guard Conner Frankamp missed a pair of free throws with 16 seconds remaining to give Oklahoma an opening that it ultimately couldn’t capitalize on despite a big Jordan Woodard 3-pointer late in the contest.

For Wichita State, the 76-73 win is an important one to help build its NCAA Tournament resume. The Shockers have struggled to find a big non-conference win this season, losing to both Louisville and Michigan State at the Battle 4 Atlantis, but the Sooners are a potential tournament team out of a major conference and Saturday’s victory should essentially count as a road win despite not being played in Norman.

Those successes are important for a mid-major like Wichita State who won’t have too many opportunities to pick up big wins during conference play. Although Northern Iowa, Illinois State and Indiana State are all worthy competitors, the Missouri Valley seems likely to be a one-bid league if the Shockers win the conference tournament. If they don’t, wins like these provide a safety net as the committee reviews resumes on Selection Sunday.

Daishon Smith and the Shockers will have another chance to pick up a quality win next weekend when they face off against the Sooners’ Bedlam brother, Oklahoma State, at Charles Koch Arena in Wichita.
