Myles Garrett declares for 2017 NFL Draft
By John Buhler
Surprising nobody, Texas A&M Aggies defensive end Myles Garrett will forgo his final season of eligibility and enter the 2017 NFL Draft.
Sometimes, it’s painfully obvious when a player needs to leave school a year early and enter the NFL Draft. With so much money on the table, Texas A&M Aggies pass rusher Myles Garrett announced on New Year’s Eve that he would be leaving College Station a year early to enter the 2017 NFL Draft.
Garrett starred in his junior season for the Aggies. His dominance in the Texas A&M front-seven under the tutelage of defensive coordinator John Chavis helped the Aggies be a College Football Playoff pretender this season.
Pass rushers of Garrett’s caliber are hard to find. He can thrive in any defensive scheme at the next level. Garrett has an unreal motor and at 6-5, 265-pounds has the ideal measurables for the position. He had 8.5 sacks this year and 32.5 for his career.
Garrett is not going to bust in the NFL, barring injury. He made the right call to enter the draft a year early. Garrett was incredible to watch play for the Aggies and he thanked his coaching staff and Gig ‘Em Nation before making his decision to leave school a year early.
He is one of a few blue-chip prospects that will be in the 2017 NFL Draft. He’s going to be a top-five pick. There is almost no way he makes it past either the Chicago Bears or the Jacksonville Jaguars in the top five. There is a solid chance that he could be the No. 1 overall pick by the Cleveland Browns.

Assuming a Browns’ loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field in Week 17, Cleveland will have the No. 1 overall pick after going 1-15 in the 2016 NFL season. The Browns could target a quarterback, possibly Mentor native Mitch Trubisky, but Garrett could be the safest selection at the top of the first round.
