Brent Musburger made a few comments about Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon, which rubbed some people the wrong way.

During Monday night’s Sugar Bowl broadcast, play-by-play man Brent Musburger made a few comments about Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon, hoping he has a successful career. This stems from the recent heat on Mixon after a video was released of him striking a woman in 2014, which got him suspended from the Sooners football program for that season.

In the third quarter, Musburger addressed the criticism he received and gave a fiery response, backing everything he said. Most notably, the longtime broadcaster said he “believes in second chances,” hoped Mixon gets his with a successful NFL career, and creates a better image for himself after the 2014 incident.

Well, fans took exception to this on Twitter, given the nature of Mixon’s situation. Here’s what a handful of them had to say:

Football fans watching the Sugar Bowl very much took offense to Musburger’s comments. There were certainly more of them than people defending his comments about Mixon, which is something to note.

The incident with Mixon from 2014 is terrible and something that is going to be difficult for people to erase from their minds going forward, especially if he goes to the NFL. Attention may be placed on the team that takes him, whether it’s in the draft or as an undrafted free agent this spring. Will the potential media scrutiny be worth it for a team that wants to take a chance on him?

Brent Musburger’s comments didn’t sit well with many people and may be a talking point going forward. It’s a controversial take on a topic that was mentioned throughout the last few months of 2016, and will likely be the case in early 2017.
