Oklahoma’s Samaje Perine became the school’s all-time leading rusher at Monday night’s Sugar Bowl.

Samaje Perine has had a stellar career with the Oklahoma football team. Coming into Monday night’s Sugar Bowl, he had over 4,000 yards rushing in his three-year college football career. He also was incredibly close to (83 yards) Billy Sims’ school rushing record of 4,118 yards. While it wouldn’t be a forgone conclusion that this could be broken, the junior running back stood a decent chance at pulling this off.

Well, in the fourth quarter, Perine achieved the record as the all-time leading rusher in Oklahoma football history. He did this on a 15-yard run and was applauded by his teammates, who were aware of what he had just accomplished.

Something to note is Perine could still return to college for another year and shatter this rushing record. With the NFL calling and a likely Day 2 spot awaiting him in the draft, though, we could see him skip his senior season and pursue a professional football paycheck. He would join the likes of Leonard Fournette, Dalvin Cook and Christian McCaffrey, all of whom have declared their intentions of entering the 2017 selection process.

If the Pflugerville, TX native does return, he’ll play with returning quarterback Baker Mayfield. They would help make for a dynamic one-two punch for next season, potentially making for one of college football’s best offenses again. This would even be with Dede Westbrook’s graduation and Joe Mixon possibly leaving for greener pastures.
