The Mississippi State Bulldogs men’s basketball team and staff came to the rescue, helping a woman to safety after she slid off the road in an icy storm.

The SEC basketball season is underway in early January. Coinciding with the start of SEC play was the first Southern snowstorm of the year. While the Southeast only got a bit of snow, keep in mind that this area of the country doesn’t have the resources to deal with the slightest form of frozen precipitation. People panic and drivers aren’t accustomed to driving in these sort of road conditions.

On their way to the play the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge on Friday, the Mississippi State Bulldogs men’s basketball team saw a car in front them slide off the road and into a ravine. Mississippi State coach Ben Howland and his staff acted heroically to rescue a woman who flipped her car on the icy road.

Howland would instruct his players to stay on the bus to keep an eye out for any other motor vehicle that could slide off the highway. The Mississippi State head coach would tell ESPN on the incident, “We were worried this thing was going to explode. It was scary. It’s really a blessing she walked away from that. The car was totaled. I’m really thankful we weren’t seeing something that was more of a disaster. Wearing a seatbelt saved her life.”

The weather was a factor the entire drive from Starkville to Baton Rouge, as Howland would say he saw five accidents on the way to LSU. Mississippi State will wisely choose to fly home after its game with LSU on Saturday. Stay safe out there, folks and wear a seatbelt.
