Although The Legend of Zelda and Mario may get more attention for the Nintendo Switch, today’s presentation was all about Fire Emblem. What did we learn?

Everyone basically figured that The Legend of Zelda and Mario would both show up on the Nintendo Switch. Both of them claimed plenty of attention during last week’s massive presentation. However, Nintendo also gave some love to Fire Emblem, its strategy RPG series, by announcing a spinoff in the form of Fire Emblem Warriors.

As a follow-up, Nintendo also put out a Direct video today detailing the future of the franchise. Although it didn’t last very long, there was a lot to sift through, including confirmation of new titles as well as the first mobile Fire Emblem experience. Luckily, yours truly knows her way around a Fire Emblem game or two (or three … or more).

Here’s what we learned!

5. A Fire Emblem game will come to the Nintendo Switch

This one came as a sort of blink-and-you’ll-miss it announcement. However, the Direct did confirm that a proper Fire Emblem game will be released on the Nintendo Switch. Since it wasn’t confirmed as a remake of an older game, we expect it to be a new game in the series.

For those worrying that you’ll have to get through the entire series before next year, that shouldn’t be a problem. Fire Emblem doesn’t do sequels, generally speaking. However, this will be the first console game in the series since Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, which dropped during the Wii era. (Not only does it feature Ike, it’s also a sequel to Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance for the GameCube.)

No title for this new Switch game was given. However, it currently has a release window of 2018. Judging by the release dates of both Awakening and Fates, we could very well see a first quarter release.
