Naming our All-Star starters and reserves

As dawn (er, noon) breaks anew on Thursday, Jan. 19, the Fastbreak Breakfast crew awakes groggily from their side-hustle as part-time hype men for the Memphis Grizzlies. Later today the NBA will announce the starters for the 2017 All-Star Game, and Keith, Jon and Chuck have many opinions on who they each want to see included. Luckily, they committed these opinions to tape before their night of revelry to be able to share with you. And not just the starters, Fastbreak Breakfast goes the extra mile and picks the complete All-Star starters and reserves for each conference.

Among the issues discussed in naming our All Stars:

  • Is team success or individual achievement more important?
  • With so many agreed upon or obvious choices, how many of the 24 All Star spots are actually available?
  • Who is the most shocking selection that can be reasonably defended?
  • Will Dwyane Wade’s likely inclusion cost another Eastern conference player their first All Star nod?
  • With injuries to Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, will that open up space for Mike Conley?
  • Will losing records hamper the campaigns for Damian Lillard, Carmelo Anthony and others?
  • How many centers is too many? In the Western Conference is there room for Marc Gasol and Rudy Gobert plus DeMarcus Cousins? Why not DeAndre Jordan?
  • How are Gordon Hayward’s All Star chances affected negatively by the good play of one of his teammates?

In addition to the All-Star discussion:

  • Fun with numbers comparing Isaiah Thomas’ 2016-17 season to other other historic seasons
  • Lamenting that excessively covering Nikola Jokic isn’t reaching the desired audience
  • Social media hijinks from Seth Curry and Jahlil Okafor’s father
