Who was the last NFL MVP to win the Super Bowl?

With Matt Ryan’s loss in Super Bowl 51, we have to ask who was the last player to win regular season MVP and take home the Vince Lombardi Trophy?

Matt Ryan was on his way to being the MVP of Super Bowl 51.

Then, the second half happened.

That’s when “Matty Ice” basically lived up to his name, and the Falcons defense fell under the spell of Tom Brady to pull off the greatest Super Bowl choke of all time and send Falcon Nation running for Stone Mountain.

There is one person, however, who is celebrating Ryan’s loss in Super Bowl 51 — Kurt Warner.

Why?

Well, because he can keep the tag of being the last player to win the regular season MVP award and the Super Bowl in the same season, that’s why. Ryan was the regular season MYP this year, and rightfully so as he led a Falcons offense that was a point scoring machine.

So was the then-St. Louis Rams of 1999 as Warner, who came basically out of nowhere, was the engine behind an offense that would be dubbed “The Greatest Show on Turf.” Warner, who only started one game in the 1998 season, led the Rams to a 13-3 finish, and he compiled 4,353 yards and 41 touchdowns.

That was good enough for Warner to receive the regular season MVP award, and, to add icing to the cake, Warner had a playoff to remember, throwing for 1,063 yards and 8 touchdowns on the way to Atlanta for Super Bowl XXXIV.

Once there, Warner outdueled the late Steve McNair (who was the runner-up in MVP voting that year) to capture his first Vince Lombardi Trophy. Warner was the MVP of that game as well, throwing for 414 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions.

Warner’s dream 1999 season would be the last time a regular season MVP would also go on to win the Super Bowl. Ryan was on the cusp of breaking the unlucky streak, but just like the “Madden Curse,” there are just some courses that are meant to be broken.
