Despite not playing in Super Bowl 51, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton got some airtime during the big game in a Buick commercial.

Overall, the Super Bowl 51 commercials have been lackluster in the early going. However, a familiar face showed up during Buick’s first ad of the night.

Newton wasn’t the only star featured in the ad. Miranda Kerr, who is best known as Victoria Secret’s first Australian model, drove the Buick during Sunday’s Super Bowl 51 ad. This ad is one of the better ones shown in the first half of play.

The minute ad, which will cost Buick around 10 million dollars to air on FOX, was worth it. The car company featured two popular celebrities. Likewise, inserting Newton into the end of the commercial after the pee-wee quarterback fell over makes perfect sense. NFL fans are well aware of him no matter the allegiance. Likewise, those who only watch NFL games during Super Bowl games know Newton as well. In addition, Buick reaches the female and male audiences further by featuring a model in their car commercial as well.

While this Buick ad was not a home run or one of the best Super Bowl ads ever, it was well done. Buick definitely won’t be getting any bad press from the commercial. Likewise, the company name was clearly labeled and part of the commercial, unlike other Super Bowl 51 ads.

Newton’s cameo in the ad wasn’t long, but it was well worth it. The ad shows how pee-wee football has more similarities with NFL games than it has differences. Football is still football no matter what level of talent it is. Newton, or the youth quarterback, need to get back up and stay positive even when they get knocked down. Buick inserted appropriate humor as well to introduce the NFL star into its Super Bowl ad.
