NBC’s Law & Order: SVU celebrates its 400th episode, directed by Mariska Hargitay. Here’s how you can watch season 18, episode 12 live, on TV and online.

This week’s installment of NBC‘s Law & Order: SVU is a milestone. The long-running spin-off of Law & Order will celebrate its 400th episode on Wednesday — more episodes than most series can even fathom.

Season 18, episode 12 puts the focus squarely on the star who’s gotten the show to 400. Mariska Hargitay not only stars as Lt. Olivia Benson in “Motherly Love” but makes her directorial debut with the episode as well. It’s fitting that Hargitay is center stage this week, given that she’s the only original cast member still with the series.

The guest cast is led by Sarah Wynter, who recently starred in Amazon’s Goliath opposite Billy Bob Thornton, but will also be recognizable to fans as Kate Warner from the second season of FOX’s 24.

But given the title of the episode fans will be wondering if it also applies to Benson and her son, Noah, too. Benson loves her son above all else, even ending her relationship with Captain Ed Tucker to focus on motherhood. So as SVU reaches 400, will it be a big episode for the character as well as the actress who plays her?

Here’s how NBC officially describes the episode:

"A teenaged boy uses a rifle to stop an assault on his mother, but soon learns the target was someone he knows."

Congratulations to Law & Order: SVU on reaching 400 episodes. Many series these days would be lucky to reach 40. The question now is how many more episodes can Hargitay and NBC add to that total? Could we be talking about 500 episodes in a few more years?
