As part of GameInformer’s exclusive coverage of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in March, we learn more about the dungeons.

The Legend of Zelda series is memorable for a variety of reasons. The characters, the story, the combat and the gorgeous world are just a few. But inside of all of this, dungeons play a huge role in every game.

In order to advance in the game and obtain certain items, you must complete the dungeon before continuing the journey. That’s been the standard for most Zelda games and it’s a ton of fun. Breath of the Wild will follow a similar format, but don’t expect it to be identical.

Since the beginning, the creators stated that they planned on introducing a number of new ways to play Breath of the Wild. At its core it’s still Zelda, but its also something new entirely.

In Breath of the Wild, there are over 100 shrines, so there are plenty of dungeons to play through. Obviously, details are still very minimal, but from what has been shown, most of the shrines seem very familiar. You go through a series of levels, unlock doors and fight a boss at the end. We expect some differences in the full build, though.

Some differences include the maps. Instead of obtain a paper map, you now get a 3D model which shows specific locations that you need to seek out. There are also no more compasses. From the moment you enter the dungeon, you’ll know what you need to do, but you’ll have to figure out your way there.

Finally, another unique difference is how Link has some control over the dungeon. The Sheikah Slate plays a role in this in one way or another.
