Just when Lane Kiffin thought his days in the limelight were over he gets pulled right back into the fray.

In a somewhat bizarre situation, Lane Kiffin is personally named in a lawsuit by former Alabama wide receiver Antonio “A.C.” Carter. NBC Sports’ John Taylor reports that Kiffin led Carter to believe he was a shoe-in to be the next strength and conditioning coach for Florida Atlantic University.

Allegedly, Kiffin kept Carter nipping at the bait just long enough for Florida Atlantic to use Carter’s personal relationship with a 4 start recruit to help him sign with FAU. The plot thickens. Shortly thereafter, Carter uprooted his entire family for a move to Florida, failed a background check and was then informed he would not be hired.

Talk about a tough break. From his perspective, I’m sure everything FAU told him implied that the job was a lock. That being said, it’s pretty risky to move your entire family for a new job without having something in writing. Now he’s suing to try and make right what he feels is wrong. A quote from Jason Bateman in the film Dodgeball applies here, “Bold strategy Cotton let’s see how it plays out”. Bold strategy indeed.

With the stringent recruiting landscape, I would bet A.C. won’t have a difficult time making his case. My hope is they don’t find FAU guilty of any wrongdoing. I typically hate sanctions because generally they hurt the school and its current players who had nothing to do with the original incident. Look at Pete Carroll in Seattle. When he was at USC, as soon as the writing was on the wall he got out of dodge quick.

There’s a long way to go before an outcome is determined, but hopefully FAU stays in the clear. Maybe Lane is re-thinking his move from sweet home Alabama.
