No. 11 Xavier took out Pac-12 champions Arizona in the Sweet 16, but Malcolm Bernard got a little too caught up in the moment.

Even though Xavier reached the Sweet 16 as a No. 11 seed, nobody was talking about them as a great Cinderella story. They needed a big upset victory and got it against Arizona, a popular pick to reach the Final Four. Now, it’s unlikely that anybody will be ignoring the Musketeers and Trevon Bluiett in the Elite Eight.

But while everyone on the Musketeers is overjoyed to be in the Elite Eight, perhaps some might feel annoyed about Bluiett getting all the attention. Malcolm Bernard was one of the more important contributors in Xavier’s upset over Arizona, and even got to dribble the ball out at the end of the game. But once the final buzzer sounded, he couldn’t contain his emotions:

Everyone’s talking about Bernard now, but for all the wrong reasons. A strong performance against Gonzaga would be the best way to get over this embarrassment, but for now, he should take it in stride. After all, an 11 seed hasn’t made it this far since VCU back in 2011.

Nobody believed in Xavier this year. Not after they went 9-9 in the Big East, and lost six straight towards the end of the regular season. They were lucky to make it to the NCAA Tournament, but now that they’re here, they’ve proven they can hang with the big boys.

Xavier’s matchup against Gonzaga will be fascinating to watch. Gonzaga may be a consistent powerhouse, but they’ve never gotten over the hump in the Tournament. This is only their third Elite Eight appearance, and they’ve never made it past that stage. They also barely made it past West Virginia in the Sweet 16.

With so many scoring options, and Bluiett leading the way, Xavier must feel like they can take out Gonzaga. That’s the beauty of March Madness, there are absolutely no guarantees.
