New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia has been suspended 15 games by Major League Baseball, for violating domestic abuse policy.

Further proof was shown on Wednesday, just how serious Major League Baseball is taking violations to their domestic violence policy. New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia has been suspended 15 games by Major League Baseball for a violation of that policy. The news was confirmed on Twitter, via MLB Network’s Ken Rosenthal.

Familia was arrested last fall and charged with misdemeanor domestic violence, after an incident involving his wife. He denied any wrongdoing, though she called 911 to report the altercation. Charges were dropped back in December, the record of the case was expunged, and his wife did not pursue anything further regarding the case. He released a statement on Wednesday, accepting responsibility for what happened.

"It is important that it be known that I never physically touched, harmed, or threatened my wife that evening. I did, however, act in an unacceptable manner and am terribly disappointed in myself. I am alone to blame for the problems of that evening."

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has also issued a statement on the situation.

The suspension will last 15 games, which will cost him the first half of April when the season begins. He is the fourth player to be suspended under MLB’s domestic violence policy, along with Jose Reyes and Aroldis Chapman. As his suspension will not officially begin until Opening Day, he will be able to finish Spring Training games.

Familia had 51 saves a year ago, while posting 84 strikeouts and a 2.55 ERA. He will serve as the normal closer once he returns from his suspension.
