Offseason acquisition Drew Smyly was sent to the 60-day DL, while the Seattle Mariners claimed Evan Marshall.

Drew Smyly was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Saturday with the hopes he could return within 6-8 weeks. Flash forward three days and the Seattle Mariners have placed the winter acquisition on the 60-day disabled list.

After revealing Smyly had received a platelet rich plasma injection, general manager Jerry DiPoto said Smyly would not throw for six weeks.

"“Our timeline doesn’t change — six to eight weeks is what we are looking at,” DiPoto said. “Six weeks until he begins throwing, eight is when we are anticipating to the point where we can make a better judgment on when he will re-join the club.”"

The initial report from the Mariners led you to believe the young starting pitcher would return from the disabled list, but that clearly wasn’t the case.  As DiPoto said, it will be at least eight weeks before the Mariners can fully evaluate Smyly’s timetable for a return.

The move for Smyly to the 60-day DL was a corresponding move to open up a roster spot on the 40-man.

Enter reliever Evan Marshall, who the M’s optioned to AAA-Tacoma today.

The Mariners used that roster spot to claim reliever Evan Marshall of the Diamondbacks. Marshall had been available on waivers since March 28 and appeared in six spring training games for Arizona. In his major league career, Marshall has pitched in 85 games with 78 IP, 4.50 ERA and 70 Ks.

Marshall will be an extra arm for the Mariners roster and nothing more.

There was one bit of good news for Seattle today in regards to team ace, Felix Hernandez. The Mariners’ starting rotation had another scare as King Felix left his start Monday with groin tightness.  However, the early exit on Opening Day was a precautionary measure and he will make his next scheduled start.
