Manchester City took the lead against Hull on Saturday thanks to an own goal by Ahmed Elmohamady.

Manchester City are playing Hull in the Premier League at the Etihad Arena. City haven’t been in good form lately, having won one, drawn three and lost one in the past five matches. City are currently sitting fourth in the Premier League standings, but only four points ahead of fifth place Arsenal with a game in hand. They have a good shot to get into the winning column against Hull, who sit two points out of the relegation zone in 17th for the first time since the opening weeks of the season.

The match has been mostly Manchester City attacking Hull, but the Tigers have conjured a few counter-attacking moves of their own. Manchester City have been rather dominant, and likely deserve a goal for their play so far. Ahmed Elmohamady obliged … for the wrong team.

The own goal came in the 31st minute. After a few passing moves just outside of the Hull box, Jesus Navas whipped in a driven cross that Elmohamady attempted to deal with, but failed to sort his feet out at the critical moment. The ball trickled into the back of the net, and the away team found itself down by one. Own goals are always embarrassing, but this one might sting a little more for both Hull and Elmohamady.

Directly after the goal, Hull responded by creating a gilt-edged in front of the Manchester City goal, but couldn’t find the back of the net.

The final score will have major implications for both clubs, as Hull fight for Premier League survival, and Manchester try to stay in the top four. If Hull are going to get anything out of this game, they’ll need to try and not score for the opposition.
